Theile McVey, partner of the law firm Kassel McVey, a personal injury law practice based in Columbia SC, was recently inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates. Established in 1958, The American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), is a national organization comprised of skilled trial lawyers and judges devoted to preserving and promoting the right to civil jury trial as stipulated in the Seventh Amendment of the United States Constitution. The Association seeks attorneys with integrity, skill, and civility who can help younger attorneys to develop a higher level of trial advocacy and to educate the general public about the Seventh Amendment's significance.
Membership to ABOTA is by invitation only. Once a trial lawyer has been nominated and elected, the individual may become a member if he or she is of honorable reputation, high personal character, and a member of the Bar in the location in which they practice. The applicant must also have tried a minimum of ten civil jury trials serving as lead counsel to a jury verdict or at least a hung jury, and must list these jury trials on his or her application. Theile satisfied all requirements for membership in ABOTA.

Theile has dedicated many hours towards developing the legal profession, She is currently President-Elect of the South Carolina Association of Justice. She previously served as the SCAJ Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer, chair of the Public Relations Committee as well as the chair their discovery abuse committee. She is also a member of the South Carolina Bar, the Richland County Bar Association, and the American Association for Justice. She gives back to the community as well by serving at various ministries of the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with her husband.
John Kassel, Theile's partner at the firm, is also a member of ABOTA. John was selected to be part of the annual ABOTA Masters in Trial Program held at the University of South Carolina School of Law in February 2018. The Masters in Trial Program involves presenting a mock trial to a jury, complete with opening statements, direct and cross examination of witnesses, closing arguments, and jury deliberations. The program, open to practicing attorneys from across the state who attend both in person and online. Those who sign up receive Continuing Legal Education credits needed to maintain their law licenses. The program allows the audience to see up close the style, skills, and strategy of leading trial lawyers applying their craft. This year the program involved the trial of a products liability case. John Kassel was selected captain of the plaintiff's team and cross-examined the defense expert.
